Marathon, a long run distance race, symbolizes the endurance and dedication expressed by the Athenian soldier Pheidippides, a messenger from the Battle of Marathon that took place in 490 BC, who run from Marathon to Athens to deliver victory over the Persian invaders.

Pheidippides run the entire distance of 40 km without stopping and burst into the assembly exclaiming νενικήκαμεν (we have won!).
